Not only can you pit your wits against a challenging course spanning Hampshire and Sussex, but you’ll also be able to take on one of the climbs against the clock on closed roads… a real chance to give it your all, as if you were gunning for a polka dot jersey. If a timed hill-climb wasn’t enough as part of a sportive, then notching up a century adds an extra layer of attraction to the discerning endurance rider. With a whole feast of ascents to tuck in to you’ll have certainly earned the right to feel proud at the end of this classic event. Heading out from Chichester, we’ll start you out on a gradual climb, easing you into a day comprising over 5,000 feet of ascent. The road takes you north and soon enough you’ll be in amid the whale-backed mounds of the South Downs. Make yourself at home — the national park and its numerous ups and downs will be your host for the whole day. Be prepared for one particularly rapid descent just after Duncton — indeed, as well as testing your ability to climb, the route is peppered with technical drops, testing both your handling and your nerve. The Epic route will take you briefly outside the tip of the national park before heading back in to continue chipping away at the miles. Skirting around Midhurst on an undulating ribbon of tarmac bordered by neatly nibbled pastureland, the course now begins to build to its finale… With the countryside tour continuing you duck under the outskirts of Petersfield, and presently you find yourself at the foot of the day’s foremost appointment — Butser Hill, the highest point of the South Downs. This unique climb isn’t long but tops out at mur-esque 21 per cent. We’ll time you separately from the main event so give it your all — as it features towards the end the route make sure you save some gas! Good luck!
